I have insurance from my or my spouse's former employer that covers prescription drugs and I have received a letter from the employer telling me that my prescription drug coverage IS NOT creditable coverage (my drug coverage is not, on average, as good as Medicare's).

Even if you are happy with your current coverage, it's wise to check into the Medicare drug benefit. Medicare may be able to provide you with better prescription drug coverage.

Check with the employer about your options and next steps.
Find out more about Medicare prescription drug coverage by looking at the Stand-alone drug plan and Medicare health plan options below.

There are two categories of Medicare drug plans.

Just as no two people are the same, no one drug plan would be able to meet every person’s needs. Select from one of the two categories of plans below.

If you would like a Stand-alone drug plan, click that button below.
If you would like Medicare health plan coverage click that button.
If you are still unsure of which category of plan is right for you, make sure you visit both the Stand-alone drug plan and the Medicare health plan sections of this site.

Select Stand-Alone Drug Plan (PDP)
Stand-alone drug plans provide coverage only for the Medicare prescription drug benefit.
They are meant to be used along with Original Medicare or with Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs). (Some people in Original Medicare also have a Medigap policy that covers some of your cost-sharing for Medicare Parts A & B services.)
They may also be used with Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans that do not include the Medicare prescription drug benefit, or with Medicare Cost Plans.
Select Medicare Health Plan
Medicare health plans can combine your Medicare hospital and doctor coverage with your Medicare prescription drug coverage into one Medicare health plan provided through a private insurance company.
These plans help coordinate your health care and often provide additional benefits.
They may cost you less.
