5. Choices for Prescription Drug Coverage

Medicare gives you two choices for your Medicare prescription drug benefit. This new prescription drug benefit is also called Medicare Part D.

Choice One:
Stand-Alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs)
These plans provide coverage only for prescription drugs.
They may be used with Original Medicare, Medical Savings Accounts, or with Medicare Cost Plans.
They may be used with Private Fee-for-Service Plans that do not include the Medicare prescription drug benefit.
If you choose a stand-alone drug plan to combine with Original Medicare coverage, you may also purchase an additional health insurance plan, such as a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan, to help you pay for doctor and hospital costs (coinsurance) that Medicare does not cover.

Choice Two:
Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MA-PD) Plans and those Medicare Cost Plans that include the Medicare prescription drug benefit.
These Medicare health plans combine coverage for your Medicare doctor and hospital benefits (Parts A & B) with Medicare coverage for prescription drugs (Part D) into one plan provided through a private insurance company.
