How to Choose a Stand-Alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan

There are likely to be a number of Medicare drug plans available in your community. Since people on Medicare have different needs and preferences, you have choices for your prescription drug coverage. This section will help you select a plan that is right for you.

Stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs) cover your prescription drug benefit separately from your Medicare Parts A & B (hospital and doctor) coverage. (Some people in Original Medicare also have a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan that covers some of their cost-sharing for Medicare Parts A & B services.)

Stand-alone drug plans are meant to be used along with Original Medicare Parts A & B and Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs).
They may also be used along with a Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plan that does not include a prescription drug benefit, or a Medicare Cost Plan.
Stand-alone drug plans are offered by private companies. The companies receive payments from Medicare to provide the new prescription drug benefit to people who enroll in their plans.
All Stand-alone drug plans are reviewed and monitored by the federal government.
