Now that you have learned the basics of Medicare's new prescription drug plans, you are ready to determine which plan is best for you.

What doctor, hospital, and prescription drug coverage do you have now?

To decide which CATEGORY of Medicare drug plan is best for you, it's helpful to begin by identifying the type of coverage you have now.

I DO have drug coverage I DO NOT have drug coverage

If you don’t know what type of health insurance you have now:
Look at the insurance card you use when you go to the doctor
Call 1(800) MEDICARE (1(800) 633-4227) and ask the customer service representative to help you. (When you call, you will need your Medicare number, which is on your Medicare card.)

Your Medicare card is your red, white, and blue government card. If you use more than your Medicare card when you go to the doctor, this additional card is probably your Medicare health plan card.
Call the customer service number on the back of the health plan card to find out the type of coverage you have now.

If you have prescription drug coverage through your or your spouse’s former employer:
Talk with the employer to determine if it makes sense for you to enroll in a Medicare drug plan.
The employer or health insurer offering the coverage must send you a letter telling you if your drug coverage is, on average, at least as good as Medicare's (called creditable coverage).
If you have received a letter from the employer, keep this letter.
If you don't have a letter, contact the employer and ask for it.
